For 245 years, Takeda has been driven by one central mission: better health for people and a brighter future for the world. Founded in Osaka, Japan in 1781, the global biopharmaceutical company now operates in more than 80 countries including the Netherlands, where Takeda has been active for 75 years.
“Integrity, fairness, honesty and perseverance have been at the core of Takeda since the very beginning,” says General Manager Aarnoud Overkamp. “As we evolved into a global organisation, those values remained unchanged until this day.”
Today, Takeda Nederland is based in Hoofddorp, within the Amsterdam Airport City business district. From its office in the Pharos building in Beukenhorst-Zuid, the company supports healthcare professionals and patients across the country with innovative therapies in areas such as rare diseases, oncology, neuroscience and gastroenterology.
Why Amsterdam Airport City?
Takeda first moved to Hoofddorp in 2002 and relocated to its current office near Mercuriusplein around 2019. According to Overkamp, the choice for Amsterdam Airport City was both pragmatic and felt like the right place to be for Takeda.
“We were looking for strong accessibility, mobility advantages and a professional office environment,” he explains. “Haarlemmermeer region offered that combination, together with a pleasant atmosphere and green surroundings.”
The location continues to be an important advantage today. Near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, major highways and public transport connections allow employees, international colleagues and partners to travel efficiently to and from the office.
Sustainability embedded in daily work
Takeda’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) ambitions are closely connected to its daily business operations. The company participates in the Dutch MVO Registry initiative through the Dutch Association Innovative Medicines/ Vereniging Innovatieve Geneesmiddelen (VIG) and signed the Green Deal Sustainable Care 3.0 initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Health.
Concrete actions include transitioning towards fully green employee mobility, stimulating public transport and cycling among employees, and building a more sustainable supply chain.
Local partnerships also contribute to these ambitions. Takeda works closely with catering partner Farm Kitchen in its office building, sourcing local products from farmers in and around Hoofddorp.
“It is important for us to offer healthy choices to employees while also supporting local production,” says Overkamp. “That combination aligns well with our broader ESG commitments.”
Investing in future talent and innovation
With approximately 90 employees in the Netherlands, Takeda combines the scale of a global organisation with a people-centred company culture. Employees travel to Hoofddorp from across the country, while hybrid working and flexible collaboration have become increasingly important.
“New generations of employees hold transforming views about work and workplace culture,” Overkamp explains. “The challenge is finding the right balance between remaining an attractive employer while continuing to win for patients.”
Technology also plays a growing role in future-proofing the organisation. Takeda is increasingly integrating AI-driven solutions into both internal operations and patient-focused innovation.
For Amsterdam Airport City, Takeda represents exactly the type of internationally connected company that strengthens the region’s Life Sciences & Health ecosystem: globally active, locally engaged and strongly value driven.
“We are very happy with the location we have here,” Overkamp concludes. “It allows us to focus our energy on what matters most: improving outcomes for patients.”
